Chapter Five

In the gathering shadows of twilight, Silence stood at the window looking up at the castle. Behind her the crumpled form of the house’s owner lay still and quiet, fallen beneath the supper table. The scant dinner laid out was only partially eaten, but she paid it no mind. As a construct she needed no food. Her eyes watched the battlements, recognizing the patterns of the silver and blue liveried guards as they marched. She wore all black, totally covered with the exception of her eyes.

Her mission was a simple one. Penetrate the castle defenses. Find the children. Kill them. She had no need to know the reason behind her orders, or why they were to be eliminated. It was now a need, a deep seated mental command, and it dominated her thoughts.

When full darkness enveloped the house she slipped out of the window and made her way toward the castle. She knew that she would never be able to sneak through the main gate, so she unwrapped a coil of light black rope from her waist. In the shadows, she smashed a wooden barrel, taking the metal bands and tearing them, bending them until she had fashioned a serviceable grappling hook. No one came to investigate the few noises she made and in moments she had moved around to the darkest corner of the castle wall, near one of the rear parapets.

She waited, counting in her head, for the guard to move down the wall. Her first throw resulted in a perfect lock of the grapple hook and she quickly hauled herself upward, hand over hand, until she was able to leap over the crenellated battlements onto the broad walkway along the top of the wall. She turned her head, pulling up the rope and quickly wrapped it around her waist again, the dark shape disappearing into the cloth. With feline like grace she pulled her small silver dagger from its sheath and stepped into the shadows.

It wasn’t long before the guard returned, his long halberd reflecting glints of firelight from the evenly spaced torches along the wall. Still several feet away from where she was hiding he stopped, sensing something. His ears whisked forward and his eyes narrowed and he looked into the shadows.

She leaned forward, surprising him. But before he could shout or scream she lifted one finger to her lips, the magic swirling around her.

“Ssshhhhhhhhhhhhh.”
